Senarai pencalonan Oscar 2024 yang diumumkan oleh Zazie Beetz dan Jack Quaid baru-baru ini menyaksikan beberapa kejutan dan ‘penghinaan’. Seperti telah dijangka, Oppenheimer mengungguli senarai Academy Awards ke-96 dengan 13 pencalonan. Antaranya untuk kategori filem terbaik, pengarah terbaik, serta pelakon terbaik – Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr dan Emily Blunt. Bagaimanapun pencalonan filem hit tahun 2023, Barbie tidak mencapai jangkaan penonton. Filem arahan Greta Gerwig yang meraih kutipan melebihi RM6.6 bilion ini gagal menyaingi Oppenheimer dalam mania ‘Barbenheimer’. Ia menerima lapan pencalonan termasuk filem terbaik, lagu terbaik dan pelakon pembantu lelaki terbaik – Ryan Gosling. Namun apa yang mengejutkan, Greta Gerwig tidak dicalonkan sebagai pengarah terbaik. Begitu juga dengan peneraju filem itu, Margot Robbie yang gagal tercalon dalam kategori pelakon wanita terbaik. Filem Killers of the Flower Moon dan Poor Things juga meraih momentum luar biasa, masing-masing dengan 11 dan 10. Bintang Killers of the Flower Moon, Lily Gladstone melakar sejarah dengan menjadi orang asli Amerika pertama tercalon sebagai aktres terbaik. Malangnya Leonardo DiCaprio sekali lagi gagal menyertai senarai aktor terbaik. Nama-nama lain yang layak memasuki senarai Oscar 2024 namun diketepikan termasuk Charles Melton (May December), Willem Dafoe (Poor Things), Greta Lee (Past Lives) dan Alexander Payne (The Holdovers). Academy Awards ke-96 yang memberi penghormatan kepada filem terbaik 2023 bakal dihoskan oleh Jimmy Kimmel. Ia dijadualkan berlangsung pada 10 Mac 2024 di Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles.
